I'm still struggling with being here (small picture: Poughkeepsie; big picture: human!) so I adopted this philosophy: "I seek out the experiences I want. If something doesn't exist here, I'll bring it here."
Wanting to build a green community that I could be a part of, I brought Green Drinks here.
HVGD serves two purposes: it gives green businesses, politicians, planners, scientists and sustainably minded people an "exclusive" opportunity to network and it's a way for me to enrich my circle of friends with like-minded, earth-centered people.
Other wish list item: Being spoiled by my native art-loving-Canada, I do want to see some high-quality art happenings come to Poughkeepsie: First Night Poughkeepsie, Nuit Blanche, Poughkeepsie Outdoor Cinema. Anybody interested in getting these going?
What's "green" about me? I'm in the process of carving up every square inch of my property in the City of Poughkeepsie to put in a four-season garden - terraces, sun-pit and bees, oh my! Healthy food is important to me - I even make my own breads, pasta, crackers and pizza dough. I plan on learning food preservation techniques and am even going to turn part of my creepy dirt-floor, crawl space basement into a root cellar.

| Q: Who do you want to meet through Green Drinks?
A: I am involved with HV Green Drinks to connect with others in the area who prioritize environmental concerns and activities highly. I am interested in teaming up with partners who have skills in green roofing, green building, alternative energy, architecture/building and landscape design, financial analysis of green programs and incentives and graphics designers who can understand sustainability issues with the feeling required to create compelling renderings of green alternatives. I am interested in the intersection of Information Technology and Sustainability practices.
What's "green" about you? I have a Bachelor of Science from UC Berkeley in Conservation of Natural Resources. I have maintained my acre of property with IPM, native plants, lots of Dutchess County rock work, conserved woodland and marsh areas as wildlife habitat and I also leave dead trees and brush piles for the critters. I designed my garage as a passive solar building using natural light, a cement floor as a heat sink, skylights to let the daylight in, and a long lasting metal roof and “green” (actually blue) insulation made from shredded blue jeans. I have an enormous library of books on organic gardening, green building, native plants, sustainability policy and developments, nature writing and animals. I love to hike and indulge in landscape and nature photography – North Dakota is extraordinarily photogenic - and go camping. I recycle everything possible. I have a nice compost pile brewing at all times. I let dandelions, clover and heal-all grow in my lawn and never use pesticides. And, coincident with my retirement from the computer industry, I will be building a green consulting business to serve this area. I’m looking for like-minded individuals to share the adventure!

What does the shop offer?
The shop contains a wide assortment of hand knotted rugs, a selection of wool hand and machine tufted rugs and a few dozen lines from various manufacturers of fine wool broadloom and also natural fiber carpet. The Rug Garden does expert cleaning, repair and appraisal services.
What is "green" about your business and you?
I have been selling primarily wool carpet and rugs starting at the domestic carpet manufacturer, Edward Fields in New York in 1979. After a time out to have my son, (who is now 21 and works with me at the shop), I ventured to the retail side of the business with several high end companies in New Jersey, Connecticut and Westchester. My shop shows only wool and other natural fiber carpets and rugs. I do have the latest fabrications offered in rugs, showing pieces woven from Nettle (or allo which is shown in my profile photo), mohair, yak, and metallic. I also have carpet manufacturers selling undyed wool carpet with natural jute and rubber backings. I am the only retailer in the area that offer these vendors.
Who/What other businesses do you want to meet through Green Drinks?
I do have a sizeable amount of interior designers and architects who utilize my inventory as a rug and carpet source, but meeting others through Green Drinks would be a plus. I do welcome all the Hudson Valley Green Drink members to check out the shop for themselves. I would be happy to offer a 10% discount to any member when they make a purchase.
Some short term goals: I am hoping to get a crew together from my church to help out on a rebuilding project through the Christmas in April organization. It would be nice to have members of Green Drinks who are in the building and Interior Design trades to lend a hand and help a local needy family repair or replace something in their existing homes with a more efficient, greener solution. Another business goal further down the road would have a second shop in Rhinebeck selling the carpet and broadloom only and keep The Rug Garden showcasing the beautiful rugs.

A bit about me: I run a multidimensional risk management company focused on the energy industry. While the corporation is not focused on green business it has greatly supported many green and sustainable initiatives and organizations. For the past 10 years my company has contributed 7% of its net profits to these types of charitable organizations.
To list a few:
American Farmland Trust
Adirondack Council
Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program
Scenic Hudson
Hudson Valley Greendrinks
Glynwood
Hudson Highlands Land Trust
Clearwater
Why do I attend Green Drinks events?
I’m interested in meeting like minded people for future evolvement in green projects that I will be working on.
